The lodging decides half the suitcase
A hotel, a hostel and a vacation rental provide different things. A hairdryer, towels, bed linen or an iron may already be there and then do not have to travel. Also check whether you can store your luggage before check-in or after check-out. Anyone who has to move a suitcase around the city for several hours packs differently from someone with direct room access.
Documents depend on the destination and the way you travel. ID, tickets, booking confirmation and any required reservations should be reachable offline. A digital copy does not replace every original, but it helps when you need to look something up quickly.
Choose clothing by days and plans
For a city trip, a few pieces that combine work better than separate outfits for every situation. Start with comfortable shoes you have worn in, and add clothing for the weather, a restaurant, a theater or other fixed plans. One light layer in the day pack can be enough for morning and evening without filling the suitcase.
If you are away for just a weekend, you usually do not need a complete collection of toiletries. Small amounts and whatever the lodging offers save space. Personal medications, glasses and things that are not easy to replace stay fixed entries.

Tips
- Keep your passport or ID card and the booking confirmations within reach in one bag instead of searching the big suitcase. At check-in or at a museum entrance what counts is how fast you find them, not whether you brought them at all.
- Break new shoes in before the trip. On long days on foot, pressure points show up quickly.
- For two or three days, check whether a backpack or a small suitcase is enough. Less luggage makes changing trains and the walk to your lodging easier.
- A light rain jacket can be more practical than an umbrella when your hands are full with a camera, a city map or shopping.
- If you want to go to a restaurant or a bar in the evening, put the matching outfit on top. Then you do not have to repack the whole suitcase after you arrive.
