The stove stays in the basement, the shop at the site has already closed, and the first night in a tent starts with an empty stomach instead of campfire romance. What actually ends up in the trunk decides more about the first hours on the pitch than the weather forecast does.

Before packing: check the site and what it provides

Not every campsite asks for the same equipment. If there is power at the pitch, you need the matching connector and a cable reel suitable for outdoor use. If there is a shared kitchen, your own stove may be unnecessary. Table, chairs, grill and a way to keep food cool are worth a look in the booking documents too. Whatever the site provides does not have to sit in the trunk as well.

It also matters whether you arrive with a tent, a van or a rented unit. In a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stakes and guy lines are part of the base. In a furnished mobile home, bedding or towels are often the more important questions. Check both directly with the operator, because the fittings differ even on the same site.

Order the camping packing list by situation

Pack not only by category but also by the moment you need something. Documents, flashlight, tools and a warm layer should be within reach if you arrive late. The tent and everything for pitching it travel together. Kitchen kit stays in its own box so that lighter, dishes and trash bags do not disappear among the clothes.

With clothing, the weather across the whole day is what counts. Warm afternoons say little about a cool night in a tent. Plan layers that combine, and take rain protection along regardless of an optimistic daily forecast. For longer stays, somewhere to wash is often worth more than a complete set of clothes for every day.

What you usually do not need twice

In a group, stove, tools, table and cooler do not have to come per person. Personal things such as a sleeping bag, towel or water bottle do. Agree on shared equipment beforehand and mark in a shared list who is bringing what. That way three hammers do not end up in the car while the only tin opener stays at home.
